Osanebi charges youths to Diversify into farming, agriculture
Chairman, Delta State House of Assembly Committee on Culture and tourism and member representing Ndokwa East State constituency , Rt. Hon. Friday Ossai Osanebi has called on Ndokwa youths and deltans at large to key into Agriculture especially farming in order to increase their sources of income , sustained food supply and economic growth.
Osanebi made the call today in Port Harcourt after this year’s AGIP's Green River Project (GRP); 23rd farmers’ day celebration, with the theme: Farm and Fortune’.
The GRP Farmers’ Day Celebration is a yearly event that for over 21 years now has given NAOC and its Joint Venture Partners the opportunity to celebrate the achievements of the last planting season with individual farmers, farmers’ cooperative societies, youth and women cooperative societies, agro-allied organisations, research and education Institutes, local government and NGOs.
The theme for this year was “farm and fortune”, a recognition of the fact that agriculture can trigger wealth creation as well as facilitate sustainable development in the region.
“I want our people to understand, especially our youths that there are hidden fortunes and wealth in farming, and we must deliberately, as farmers by birth - including myself, make farming very attractive and accessible to our our people , the youths and children in other to sustain food supply, economic boost and a greener environment”, Osanebi said.
The Green River Project was designed to increase agricultural productivity and prevent deterioration of the soil through the use of better farming techniques, to enhance farmer’s income.
Also, it aims at improving the quality of life of farmers through the adoption of improved sustainable farming systems and therefore contributing to the improvement of the livelihood of the households in NAOC operational communities in Rivers, Bayelsa, Delta and Imo states.
"Our youths must see farming as a major source of economic empowerment, key into it and harness the fortunes in it". Osanebi added.
The celebration day also included the traditional awards, in categories that include the farmer of the year, the best fish farmer, the best livestock farmer, best youth co-operative, best women co-operative, best plantain farmer, best pineapple farmer, best livestock farmer, just to name a few. A true celebration of individual talents and of collective achievements
Also present in the occasion was the Imo State Deputy Governor, Engr. Gerald Irona, the permanent secretary, federal ministry agriculture, royal fathers, community leaders, farmers and farmers cooperative societies.
