Delta SSG, Ebie visits IDP Camps Opens Doors For FG Support

With the upsurge of persons internally displaced by the recent floods across the state, Delta State Government has opened the doors for support from the Federal Government to complement efforts in catering for IDPs.

This was disclosed by the Secretary to the State Government, Chiedu Ebie Esq after he toured round seven camps in Patani, Isoko-south, Isoko-north, Ndokwa-east, Aniocha-north and Ndokwa-west Local Government Areas earlier today.

Addressing newsmen, Ebie who is also Chairman of the 2019 Flood, Risk Alert Management Committee constituted by Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, expressed satisfaction with camp conditions but admitted some challenges.

“It is an emergency situation and so may not be perfect. The only problem we seem to have has to do with camp population upsurge and way above our projections.

We expect that the Federal Government will support us. Delta State Government has been very proactive and acted as soon as the flood predictions were announced.

No support is too small and if the Federal Government wants to support there is no problem. Last year we got some support from FG in terms of relief materials and we look forward too this year” he said.

With 11 camps established in flood prone areas across the state, the SSG pegged the total population in camps at slightly over 18, 000, stressing that the state government was has considered building a purpose built camp for emergency situations in the state.
At one of the camps in Isoko North LGA, the SSG sympathized with the IDPs and urged them to appreciate the efforts of the state government in shouldering their welfare until the floods ceased.

“You need to understand that the present challenges were not planned by anybody. It is a natural disaster and the state government is deeply interested in your welfare” adding, “please manage as this is not a perfect situation that we have found ourselves”.
While promising to address lapses observed in some of the camps, Ebie cautioned camp officials to be responsible and prudent as government cannot afford to fund wastages.

Officials of Delta State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) and other collaborating bodies also accompanied the SSG on the inspection.
